Do I need new tires?

By, 2018-09-23

One of the most important parts to care about daily and regularly in the car are tires. It is the worn or damaged tires that lead to a high risk of accidents. Tires are highly affected by weather conditions and their surrounding factors. They are affected by extreme temperaturesor extreme cold conditions that can cause great tire damage and thus endanger the driver and passengers’ life.

So there is no way to know exactly how long a tire lasts. The lifespan of tires depends on a combination of factors: design, driver habits, climate, road conditions, and tire care. However, the following things can be considered  in mind to maintain your tires:

1- keep 5 years in mind:

After five years or more of use, your tires must be checked thoroughly once a year by a professional. If tires are not replaced after 10 years from the date of manufacture, you must replace them with new tires. Even if they appear to be in good condition for use.

2-Proper care expands tires lifespan

You can increase tires lifespan by maintaining proper air pressure, regular tire recycling operations and vehicle maintenance.

There are many factors that may lead to tire damage, including:

1- Physical factors such as age, wear and damage factors.

2 - Road conditions such as Potholes, obstacles, curbs ,sharp objects, speed bumps.

3. Weather conditions such as high temperature, rain, snow, sun radiation.

4 - Driving habits such as speeding, emergency braking, driving in damaged roads.

5 - Neglecting regular repairs of tires such as air pressure in the frame, not to check the extent of damage and corrosion of the frame, rotation and balance of tires.

6. Misuse of tires such as using summer tires during winter, not using the appropriate tire type for your vehicle, using uneven wheel sizes and tires, installing tires that do not have a speed and load ratio at least equal to or higher than those originally specified by the vehicle manufacturer .

You should avoid previous practices and replace tires with proper practices to maintain your tires from damage, thus maintaining your safety and your family's safety from accidents.

Do the following checks for tires regularly to maintain tires and to see if your tires are damaged and need to be replaced:

1- Check tire pressure

This is one of the easiest things you can check out and prevent many problems. Do this once a month.

2- Check the tread wear with one of the three methods:

  • With a tread depth gauge
  • With the tread wear indicators
  • With the penny test

One easy way to check for wear is by using the penny test. All you have to do is grab your spare change and follow 3 easy steps.

  1. Take a penny and hold Abe's body between your thumb and forefinger.
  2. Select a point on your tire where tread appears the lowest and place Lincoln's head into one of the grooves.
  3. If any part of Abe Lincoln's head is covered by the tread, you're driving with the legal and safe amount of tread. If your tread gets below that (approximately 2/32 of an inch), your car's ability to grip the road in adverse conditions is greatly reduced.
