What to Do When Your Car Broke Down on a Highway?

By, 2018-09-05

Tips if your car broke down on a highway

The breakdown of the vehicle while driving, especially on a highway, is one of the worst and most dangerous situations that may occur to any driver. Sudden breakdown of the vehicle is the cause of most accidents on highways. If you have not experienced this before, you are lucky. But all drivers and car owners must know what steps they should take to avoid road accidents if this happened sooner or later.

Follow these easy steps if your car suddenly stopped to ensure your safety on the road:

1- Pull off the road

The first step you should do when your car broke down is to pull off away from the highway and stand aside as quickly as possible and with all care. You should also turn the car hazard lights to show other cars on the road that your car is off and you cannot move. Wait until you find the right time to get out of the car and go to a safer place.

2- Call for help

Look at the highway and notice the road signs around you and if there is a nearby restaurant or gas station to indicate where you are. Then, call the help and tell them about your location. Remember if you heard sounds coming out of the engine or felt vibrations before the car has stopped. This is to tell people coming to help you and notice if there is smoke out of the hood.

3- Make your car visible

To ensure your safety on the highway and avoid accidents

  • Turn on emergency flashlights, especially at night or if the weather is bad.

  • Open the hood as a sign for others to notice

  •  Place the reflective triangles around your car, which is 10 feet far from the car.

4- Don’t get out of the car

If you found that you can’t get out of the car because of the traffic fast line, never leave. Going out in this situation is very dangerous and standing next to the car is a very bad idea. All you have to do is to turn on the hazard lights and call for help.
