Follow these tips and let your battery survive cold weather

By, 2018-11-28

Winter is one of the most common season of car problems, especially battery problems. As temperatures drop, batteries begin to lose much of their power and ability to operate the vehicle. The battery loses almost 50% of its operating capacity when temperatures drop to zero in some areas. There are many tips you can follow to save your car battery from low temperatures and prepare it for winter.

Follow these tips to save your car battery in winter:

1 - Turn the power load off

Follow this step when you turn off the car, check the car and turn everything off before turning the car off . Turn off the radio, seat heater, air conditioner and anything else. These functions pull power from the battery when you start your car.

2. Clean car battery

Corrosion is one of the most serious things affecting the battery operation. Use a wire brush to remove the Corrosion, then remove the positive and negative cable connection. You can use a mixture of 1 cup water and 2 teaspoons of baking soda to help you remove and clean up the battery. Finally, Buy a corrosion protectant to spray on the battery then reconnect the cables. Always make sure to connect the positive cable first.

3. Test car battery

If your battery is two or three years old, you should test it to make sure it works efficiently before winter so the car does not suddenly stop due to the battery. Use the multimeter to test the voltages output of the battery, then turn on the device and read the measurement. If the battery reads between 12.4 and 12.6, then your battery needs to be recharged. If the battery reading is less than 12.4, replace the battery with a new one.

4 - Garage your car

As temperatures approach zero, your battery’s power output decreases. A brand new battery functioning at 100% capacity reduces to 50%. Therefore, batteries of  two or three years will operate at a lower capacity. When placing the car in the garage, it will reduce the windchill factor that affects the battery. The garage acts as a barrier that protect the battery from external natural elements.

Prepare your car and battery to receive winter, and do not let the problem of cold weather affects you .Test the battery before winter and replace it if it does not produce enough voltage. Clean the battery in case of corrosion. Always make sure that the car's extra functions are turned off to reduce the load on the battery.
