Ashghal opens new tunnel on Lusail Expressway to ease traffic flow to Katara

 

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal)  has opened a new tunnel on the Lusail Highway at the Qasr intersection, 750 meters long. The opening ceremony was attended by Ashghal Highway Department Manager Youssef Al Emadi, Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, Central Municipal Council member Jassim Al Malki along with a number of Ashghal officials and project engineers.

 

The new tunnel connects the Lusail highway with the extension of Al Khafji Street, making it easier for traffic heading from the city of Lusail and the Pearl towards Katara and surrounding hotels. The opening is part of the Lusail Road Development Project, which was opened in 2017 to boost traffic in the region. Accordingly, the new tunnel consists of two-way lanes to accommodate more than 3,500 cars per hour, as well as an emergency lane for non-disruptive traffic.

In contrast, Lusail's old road consisted of two routes in each direction to accommodate about 3,500 cars, while the capacity of the new road was increased to more than 8,000 cars per hour due to the increase in the number of lanes to 4 tracks.

 

Before the opening of the tunnel, the arrivals of the Pearl and Katifia and others in the direction of Katara and surrounding hotels should turn right corner of the intersection to Al Khafji Street until University Road and then turn back or continue to the intersection of 5/6 and then turn back to Katara.
