Shocking... Air in your car is polluted 10 times more than the street!

By, 2017-05-01

In a shocking study, scientists concluded that modern cars have failed to purify the polluted air inside the car which is collected from other cars' exhausts on the road.

Therefore, Drivers and passengers inside vehicles may be exposed to higher levels of air pollution than pedestrians on the road outside.

The study which was reported by the Daily Mail, showed that the average concentration of NO2 in new vehicles is 10 times higher than the sidewalks because the outside air contains pollen, dust and microbes, which are less harmful to health compared to fumes from diesel exhausts that carry particles Toxic.

Nick Molden, chief executive of Emissions Analytics, a private company that tests vehicle emissions in the European Union and the United States, warned that drivers and passengers may be exposed to very high doses of toxic particles if there is poor ventilation inside the vehicle. In-vehicle air pollution was measured using polluted particles that are not visible to the naked eye.

Modern cars contain 20,000 toxic particles per cubic centimeter. Since adults breathe 500 cc in one breath, it means inhaling 10 million extra particles with each breath.

Brashant Kumar, a professor of environmental engineering at the University of Surrey, pointed out that exposure to these toxins is higher and more concentrated when in traffic congestion even when the windows are closed because of the work of the fan that attracts the polluted air from the outside.

The United Nations is now in discussions to set a new global standard on air quality inside the cars.

Further tests on many types of cars are still under investigation to arrive to definitive and final results on this study, which may later influence consumer choices.

We encourage all drivers in Qatar to keep the car windows down as much as possible, especially during traffic jam, this is better for your general health.
