Qatar's Public Works Authority (Ashghal), in cooperation with a Japanese company, has launched a pilot project called “Blue Street”. The Blu street overlooks Souq Waqif and it was painted blue to reduce the heat of asphalt by 15 to 20 degrees Celsius.
Sensors to measure temperatures of the blue surface and uncoated asphalt are installed for over a year of time. The readings from the sensors will be evaluated to determine the success of the experiment. Applying the idea on more surfeces and roads in Doha depends on the results of this experiment.
The 1mm blue coating has special heat-reflecting pigment and hollow ceramic microspheres, which effectively reflects infrared radiation.
Experts suggest that this experiment could significantly reduce the temperature as the blue surface reflects the heat from the sun instead of absorbing it like the black asphalt surface.
