Causes Of Low Engine Oil Pressure

Engine Oil

Regular maintenance of engine oil is the most important factor a long life engine. In addition to saving fuel and reducing annoying noise during rotation, neglecting to replace old oil with a new one may damage the engine completely.

Over time, oil is exposed to heat and pressure, which makes it lose much of its properties gradually and becomes less viscous and efficient; so the owner of the car is required to change the oil after a certain distance depending on the quality of oil.

There are many reasons for low engine oil pressure, we list here the important ones:

1. There is not enough oil in the automobile

Sign Of Low Oil Pressure This seems almost too easy, but it is actually the biggest reason why there are oil pressure problems. Car owners will often forget about the oil and forget to have it checked. This should be part of any tune-up or inspection of the car. Besides being the most common reason, this also happens to be the easiest oil pressure problem to fix.

2. Engine wear

Like blood flowing through veins, oil follows a system of passages through the engine. Oil will pass move through the crankshaft bearings and the cam bearings of the car. If the clearance has been made wider because of these parts wearing down, oil easily flows through and that will reduce the oil pressure.

3. Trouble with the oil pressure gauge

Auto manufacturers will install oil pressure gauges in the car so that a car owner will know about the oil pressure in real time. It can happen that the car owner does not know that the oil pressure is low because of problems with the oil pressure gauge. The only way to be sure this is happening is to do a mechanical oil pressure reading.

4. Trouble with the filter

The oil filters play an important role in maintaining oil pressure. Should the filter get clogged it will reduce the pressure. The pressure relief valve of an oil filter is there to make sure the pressure does not get too high. However, if the relief valve is damaged, then oil will pass more freely in the engine, and that will reduce pressure.

5. The Viscosity of the Oil

This is the thickness of the oil being used in the car. Oil that has a high viscosity is going to be thicker and doesn’t flow as fast as oil with a lower level. This can affect the oil pressure depending on the time of year. It is quite possible that high viscosity will not allow oil pressure to build rapidly. Fortunately, there’s some very easy ways to correct any problems with the oil pressure.

It is already been mentioned that lack of sufficient oil can cause a problem. That is why a car owner should take the opportunity now and then to check the oil level in the car. Oil filters need to be maintained on a routine basis.
