New Vehicle Plate Replacement Project — Everything you need to know!

14 Dec 2025

MoI

Number Plates

New

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) of Qatar has officially launched a national project to replace current vehicle number plates with newly designed plates that meet enhanced international standards and support modern smart traffic technologies.

This initiative is part of a wider effort to upgrade Qatar’s vehicle plate system, improve road safety, digital integration with smart traffic systems and vehicle databases, and ensure scalability with the growth in the number of vehicles.

What’s in the Press Release

According to the press release shared online and reported by the media:

  • Goals of the Project
    1. Strengthen the visual identity of vehicle plates.
    2. Standardise plates according to clearer and precise criteria.
    3. Support smart traffic systems with advanced digital technologies.
    4. Part of an integrated development plan for the national plate numbering system.

The project applies to all vehicle categories and aims to allow future flexibility in numbering as the vehicle fleet grows.

  • Phased Rollout

The project will be implemented in several phases:

1. Special Plate Numbers

      • Applies to private vehicles only.
      • Owners can obtain special plate numbers via the Sooum application.
      • Those plates will be assigned the single letter Q.
      • This phase runs 13–16 December 2025.

2. New Registrations

      • Begins 1 April 2026.
      • Applies to private vehicles registered for the first time in the vehicle licensing system.
      • These vehicles will receive new plates with available letters (e.g., Q / T / R) according to sequence.

3. Existing Vehicles

      • Will cover all currently licensed private vehicles.
      • Their plates will be replaced by adding the letter Q to existing numbers.
      • Timelines for this will be announced later.

Subsequent Phases

      • Additional stages for non-private vehicles will follow.
      • These will include adding two letters to the plate numbers (instead of one).

  • New Letter System: Q, T, R

On the new plates, letter identifiers like Q, T and R will be added as part of the sequence — starting with:

    • Q (Phase 1 & 3),
    • followed by T, then
    • R in future allocations.

This is meant to ensure greater clarity, scalability, and systematic growth of plate numbering to accommodate the increasing number of registered vehicles.

The new plates are designed to align with top international standards, support advanced digital and smart-traffic technologies, be more readable both visually and electronically, and integrate with vehicle licensing databases and intelligent traffic systems.Officials emphasized that this change goes beyond aesthetics and represents a national step in building a modern and sustainable vehicle numbering system that can support Qatar’s long-term traffic and digital plans.

Costs & Charges

The MoI stated that the new plates will be issued under the same existing charges as current plates, meaning there’s no additional fee increase solely for the new design.

Key Dates to Remember

Date Event
13–16 Dec 2025 Phase 1 — Q letter allocation via Sooum app for special plates.
1 Apr 2026 Phase 2 — New plate installation starts for new vehicle registrations.
TBA 2026+ Phase 3 — Current vehicles updated; non-private vehicles added.

If you want a special or fancy number with the new plate design, apply via Sooum between 13–16 Dec 2025 for a Q-letter plate.

New car registrations from April 2026 will automatically get the updated plate under this system.

Existing vehicle owners will eventually need to update to the new system once timelines are announced.
