The General Directorate of Traffic is seeking always to develop and facilitate traffic services and the way to reach its services by citizens in order to maintain safety and reduce traffic accidents in Qatar.

Safety can be done by the services provided by the General Directorate of Traffic at its headquarters and its external departments in addition to the integrated security services centers. The General Directorate of traffic provides the following services: Licensing and registration of vehicles, license and examination of drivers, Traffic patrols, traffic investigations, and finally planning and traffic safety.

The Ministry of the Interior, represented by the General Directorate of Traffic, always provides all means of protection and safety for citizens. The Ministry of the Interior and the General Directorate of Traffic ensure the need to stay in touch with citizens to inform them of all updates, traffic safety and other news that guarantee their safety.

In this sense, the Ministry of the Interior, on its official website and on its social media platforms, publishes all the news concerning the safety of citizens and important data.

Hence, the role of the Traffic Planning and Safety department in Qatar is to organize road closures and diversions and notify citizens about the changes, the Public Works Authority “Ashgal” can't make any changes on roads during the development process without getting the approval from the General Directorate of Traffic represented in the Department of Planning and Traffic Safety.

What is Traffic Planning and Safety department in Qatar and what are its functions ?

You should have read before what the Public Works Authority of Qatar publishes about traffic closures or traffic diversions, which aim to develop road projects to facilitate citizens and reduce congestion on roads as well as to maintain citizens’ safety. Every time a closure or traffic diversion is made in coordination with the General Directorate of Traffic by date, hour, duration of closure and alternative routes that citizens must follow.

This coordination is carried out with the Traffic Planning and Safety department, which is responsible for communicating the Public Works Authority "Ashghal" to coordinate traffic in closures and traffic transfers. Therefore, the Public Works Authority couldn’t make any changes on roads without the approval of the Traffic Planning and Safety Department.

The Department of Traffic Planning and Safety aims to carry out the following tasks in order to maintain the smooth flow of traffic and the safety of citizens:

Drawing general policy for the advancement with the devices and equipment for controlling and monitoring traffic as well as the public study about the land usages in terms of classification of roads.
Putting appropriate programs between traffic engineering and road engineering
Study the latest systems used in transportation and traffic planning, fix the places of traffic jam as well as search for technical engineering methods to address them
Supervise the maintenance of damaged traffic signals and work for its installation in coordination with the competent authorities.
Complete supervision of the radars and cameras technically and coordination with the relevant authorities.
Grant permits for street closures and demolition and construction permits as well as approvals for shops, educational centers and kindergarten.
