MoI marks road traffic victims day under the slogan “Roads have Stories”

The Ministry of Interior in Qatar has commemorate the World Day of Remembrance for Road traffic Victims under the slogan "Roads have stories".  A number of entities have participated in the event such as the General Directorate of Traffic, the Public Works Authority, the Ministry of Transport and Communications and others.

 

This event aims at enhancing road traffic safety to reduce the number of deaths by providing the highest standards of safety and raising awareness about the importance of following road safety laws among people. Major General Mohammed Saad Al - Kharji stressed on the active role of all public and private institutions in spreading traffic awareness among road users.

Qatar's efforts to enhance traffic safety

 

the State has paid great attention to provide safety for all road users. Therefore, the National Strategy for Traffic Safety was launched and all governmental and non-governmental sectors participated to reduce mortality from 13 deaths per 100,000 to 6 deaths per 100,000 by 2022. Indeed, the General Directorate of Traffic and the Public Works Authority and other relevant institutions have taken part in the work and exerted great efforts in spreading traffic safety and reducing accidents on the road.

 

The General Directorate of Traffic held several awareness campaigns regularly about traffic safety and the need to abide by safety laws on the road to maintain the safety of drivers and road users alike. The Public Works Authority of Qatar is also making road development projects to reduce congestion in some areas which will reduce road accidents. Indeed, the number of deaths in traffic accidents in 2017 has decreased by 75% if compared with 2006.

 

Causes of traffic accidents in Qatar

 

As part of the efforts of the General Directorate of Traffic to raise awareness about traffic safety on the road, Maj. Gen. Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani stated in an awareness campaign organized by the General Directorate of Traffic about the causes of traffic accidents in Qataras follows:

 

1- Using phones during driving.

2- passing speed limits.

3- not abiding by Qatar traffic law.

4- A lot of traffic changes.

Roads have Stories

 

During the event, in order to raise awareness, Nasser Al Sawafi sitting on his wheelchair, spoke about his painful experience on the road.

 

"Before 2007, I could pass these stairs in a single jump, but now I can't pass one stairs." With these words, Nasser Al-Sawafi has returned to the day of the incident while riding on a road. However he was commitment to traffic rules and laws, one sign was the cause of a traffic accident with a camel on that dark road.

 

The incident resulted in a severe spinal injury that left him disable to move or walk and he stayed caged in his wheelchair. Al Sawafi stressed on the need to abide by traffic laws and to know the meanings of all road signs to avoid such painful incidents and to preserve your life and others.
